🪷 A Mantra I Was Taught As A Child…
As a child, I remember being taught the Gayatri Mantra with great reverence.
Whenever I felt fear—whether it was a bad dream, a moment of uncertainty, or just one of those unexplainable childhood worries—I was told:
“Just chant the Gayatri Mantra… everything will be okay.”
And I did. Not fully understanding what I was saying, not questioning the why... just trusting the wisdom passed down by my parents. It became a comforting rhythm, a safety net of sorts.
But over the years, like many of us, I drifted away from it. Life got busy, and those ancient words became a distant memory.
Recently though, the mantra found its way back to me—this time not as a habit, but as a soul calling. And with it came a desire to understand its real power.
🌘 “You Shouldn’t Chant It After Sunset…”
As I started reconnecting with this mantra, someone reminded me:
“You’re not supposed to chant the Gayatri after sunset.”
And it left me confused. Because... fear doesn’t check the time of day, does it?
What if anxiety hits at night?
What if the heart feels unsettled in the dark?
Isn’t that when we need the light the most?
This question stayed with me, and I knew I had to explore it more deeply—not just to clear the confusion, but to realign with what the mantra really represents.
🕉️ What Is the Gayatri Mantra?
The Gayatri Mantra is one of the most ancient and sacred Vedic mantras, found in the Rig Veda (Mandala 3.62.10). It’s often called the Mother of All Mantras—a prayer that transcends religion and speaks directly to the soul.
Here’s the mantra:
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वःतत्सवितुर्वरेण्यंभर्गो देवस्य धीमहिधियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥
Om Bhur Bhuvah Swaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat
✨ What Does It Mean (In Simple Words)?
This mantra is essentially a prayer to the Divine Light—not just the sun in the sky, but the inner light that clears confusion, fear, and ignorance.
Let’s break it down:
- Om – The universal sound; the vibration of creation
- Bhur Bhuvah Swaha – The three realms: physical, mental, and spiritual
- Tat Savitur Varenyam – We meditate on the most divine, radiant light of the Creator
- Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi – May this light purify and uplift our consciousness
- Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat – May it guide our thoughts and awaken our higher mind
It’s like saying:
“Let me be guided by divine clarity. Let my thoughts align with truth.”
🌞 Why Is It Linked to Sunrise?
Traditionally, the Gayatri Mantra is chanted during Sandhya times—sunrise, noon, and sunset. These are spiritually significant transition periods. The reason?
Because the mantra is connected to Savitar, the Sun God—the bringer of divine light. Chanting during these times aligns our vibration with the natural rhythms of day and light.
In many Vedic teachings, it is advised not to chant this mantra after dark, as it invokes solar (activating, sattvic) energies.
🌙 But Can We Chant It After Sunset?
This is where I found deep comfort.
While Vedic tradition recommends certain timings, spirituality is not about rules—it’s about connection.
If you're feeling fear at night… if your mind is racing, or you need grounding—why deny yourself the medicine that works?
Your intention matters more than the hour.
Your heart matters more than a rulebook.
“Let your devotion guide you. Let your healing matter more than the clock.”
So now, I still chant it at sunrise when possible—but I no longer hesitate to whisper it after sunset, especially when it brings peace. And trust me—it always brings peace.
oking back now, I realise—what was passed down to me wasn’t just a chant.
It wasn’t labelled as “religious” or “spiritual.”
It was simply… a powerful tool.
It was my parents’ way of saying:
“You are safe. Even when you’re scared, even when it’s dark… just remember the light inside you.”
I may not have understood the Sanskrit at the time, but I felt the energy.
I followed the rhythm. I held on to the feeling of being protected.
And now, as an adult, I see just how powerful that simple practice truly was.
Today, I choose to hold it with full awareness—and share it with those who may be needing that same quiet sense of inner safety.
💬 A Personal Closing Note
I didn’t realise how much I missed this mantra—until I needed it again.
And now, it’s become a part of me in a way it never was before.
Some of you who’ve interacted with me have probably heard me suggest this:
“Include the Gayatri Mantra in your day… even if just once.”
Say it softly. Let it be your pause.
Let it be your anchor—whether at sunrise, sunset, or even midnight.
This mantra isn’t just a chant.
It’s a bridge.
From fear to faith.
From chaos to calm.
From forgetfulness… to remembrance.
